FOREX VIDEO | New York Session Review | January 21, 2011


The loonie exhibited a firmer tone against its US counterpart after the release of a report showing that Canadian retail sales in November grew at the fastest pace in 8 months. The EUR/USD currency pair closed the day above 1.36 for the first time since November 22.

Over the ten trading days since the start of the year, the GBP/JPY currency pair has closed higher on eight of them. Today, the pair rose more than 80 pips from its New York session low during the final two hours of the European trading week.

The US dollar started the New York session with a firm tone as commodities saw a sharp sell-off. The greenback also got a boost from data showing a rise in US factory orders and an upward revision to durable goods orders figures. The EUR/USD currency pair fell more than 100 pips after the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange.

The GBP/CHF currency pair got a boost from a firmer British pound and what was likely some profit taking on Swiss franc long positions. The pound swissie rose more than 150 pips from its New York session lows, before finishing 2010 just north of 1.4550.

The Swiss franc attained new all-time highs against currencies from both sides of "the pond" today. The GBP/CHF currency pair fell more than 100 pips during the New York session, settling near 1.44 at the end of the European trading day.

Demand for the US dollar disappeared and investor appetite for riskier assets returned today as China refrained from raising rates. Pressure on the greenback continued following a warning from Moodys citing increased odds of a negative outlook on the US sovereign rating. The EUR/USD currency pair rose more than 150 pips over the course of the New York session.

The European trading day ended with a bang as rumors of a US financial contribution to the eurozone's EFSF sparked a 110-pip rally on the EUR/USD currency pair over just eight minutes.

The euro saw further selling pressure on the final trading day of the month as the 10-year Spanish/German and Italian/German bond spreads reached post-EMU records. The EUR/USD currency pair dropped more than 70 pips during the first half of the New York morning, then settled above 1.30 at the London close.
